The Dark Knight delivers

So I finally saw “The Dark Knight” last night and the much-hyped film did deliver – even if it was about 30 minutes too long!

Yes it is Batman’s movie, but Heath Ledger’s “Joker” dazzles from the minute he hits the screen. Ledger is creepy, psychotic, comical and at times cartoonish in his portrayal of one of the most famous comic book villains of all time.

An Entertainment Weekly review described Ledger’s “Joker” voice as similar to comedian Al Franken – which is a pretty accurate comparison. His sing-song tone helps keep viewers uneasy.

Also the Joker loves telling everyone how he got the scars on his face – kind of like that old relative who loves to tell you about their gallbladder scar! Well the Joker’s explanations are just as cringe worthy.

Christian Bale’s “Batman” is similar to the first film – “Batman Begins” – brooding and gravely voiced. By the end of the movie, Bale is just about coughing out his lines.

For a good chunk of the movie Bruce Wayne pines away for Rachel Dawes (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal taking over the role from Katie Holmes), who is now the main squeeze of Gotham’s District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).

Gyllenhaal couldn’t really add too much to the role that was already too small to begin with. Eckhart was perfect as Dent but didn’t get enough time to develop his character fully as a villain. His eventual turn as “Two Face” seemed rushed.

The movie was two hours and 32 minutes of action, storyline development and at times – humor. At times the movie was a bit too much to take in.

Did anyone else see the movie yet? Is Health Ledger going to win an Academy Award for this role?

I'm the lone ranger, I guess. I didn't like it. The fight scenes were dark and confusing, and after a while I felt like it was just more of the same. I did like Heath Ledger's Joker though.

I loved the film. Personally I didn't think it was too long at all.

I thought the acting was incredible. Heath Ledger should win Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

IMHO it was the best Batman Film since Michael Keaton dawned the cape.

I really like how the film portrayed The Joker as a real psychopath. In the first Batman, the character was whimsical. Both were good.

definitely lived up to the hype in my book. just an amazing movie all around. the acting by the entire cast was phenomenal. and the hype of ledger's performance was well deserved. no longer is the joker in my mind played by jack nicholson. best magic trick ever, by the way.

Agree with Bruce. As a lifelong aficionado of Batman and disdainful of Schumacher's versions, I felt like Nolan smacked it from Gotham to Metropolis. Two Face's look was spot on! His leap from Harvey Dent to vigilante was a little too fast but I'm sure there was a lot left on the cutting room floor so the Bluray Director's cut is something I can't wait to see. If you haven't seen this film, go see it. I think I'll go see it again tonight.

As a self proclaimed Batman expert, I can tell you that the portrayals by Ledger & Eckhart of their respective villians is very much in keeping with the characters from the comics. I would have liked to have seen Two Face have his own time in the next movie, but that is not to be. Many thanks to Christopher Nolan for getting it right.
